David Cameron to kick off Tory election campaign

Thursday April 17,2008

David Cameron is due to kick off the Tories' campaign for the local elections, seeking to turn a run of favourable polls into concrete progress at the ballot box.

The launch will be held in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, where the Conservatives run Kirklees Council.

The Tory leader will be hoping to achieve breakthroughs in other parts of the North which are not traditionally Conservative strongholds.

Mr Cameron is expected to stress the Tories' commitment to the environment and address housing issues.

He will be accompanied by party chairman Caroline Spelman and shadow communities and local government secretary Eric Pickles for the launch, before travelling to Chester to meet candidates.

Mr Cameron will also meet new residents at an affordable housing development in Chester.
