The victim, who was in her 40s, died shortly after being trampled by a herd near Bungay, Suffolk, on Sunday.

An ambulance service spokesman said it was thought that she had been walking dogs when the cows stampeded.

Police said the Health and Safety Executive had begun an inquiry.

A police spokeswoman said the woman was injured as she walked a dog on a footpath across a field at South Elmham shortly after 3pm.

"She was trampled by a stampede of cows," said the police spokeswoman.

"She was out walking her dog along a footpath across a field with cows and a bull in it when the stampede occurred."

Police said no-one else was involved in the incident.
