UK NEWSCOST OF LIVING SOARS BY 11.5%Thursday May 1,2008 By Macer Hall Political EditorFAMILIES have suffered an 11.5 per cent rise in the cost of living over the past year, the Daily Express can reveal today.
For a family on an annual household budget of £10,000, this is an increase of £1,152. The true extent of the crippling effect of price rises, soaring mortgage bills and the suffocating tax burden has been laid bare by this newspaper’s essential Cost of Living Index. [>
Our research also makes it clear that household costs are now accelerating week by week, leaping by an astonishing 0.41 per cent over the last seven days alone. [>
The
figures confirm that Britain is now facing the most savage inflation
for a generation. Full details of the economic woe are confirmed as
voters go to the polls today in the first opportunity to deliver a
verdict on Gordon Brown’s premiership. The Prime Minister is braced for a backlash over the misery his soaring tax burden has added to sky-high food and fuel prices. Last night critics warned that Middle Britain will not stand for any more financial punishment. [>
Mark Wallace, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “The Daily Express’s index shows emphatically that change is needed. [>
“With rough economic conditions ahead, the Government seems oblivious to the rising tax burden. People cannot afford to pay more tax and yet fuel duty, vehicle tax, council tax and a host of other levies continue to rise.” [>
A
senior Tory accused Mr Brown of being completely out of touch. Philip
Hammond, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said: “Gordon
Brown lives on a different planet to everyone else. He doesn’t know
what the tax burden is – even though he’s responsible for pushing it up
to today’s levels.

“Hard-working families are struggling with soaring living costs, a slowing economy, falling house prices and rising taxes. It’s clear that on Planet Gordon taxes are lower than you think, poverty has been conquered and every problem is someone else’s fault.” [>
Pensioner groups said our survey underlined how the soaring cost of living was hitting older people. Paul Cann, of Help The Aged, said: “These figures mean yet more misery for poor pensioners already struggling to get by. Older people are often the hardest hit when the cost of living rises.” [>
“The Chancellor should ensure the automatic payment of benefits, so that the £4billion-plus of unclaimed pensioner benefits actually reaches the poorest. The state pension must also be raised.” [>
The Daily Express Cost of Living Index keeps track of all the bills families have to pay. It shows that price rises are way above the Government’s official inflation estimates. [>
The index demonstrates how fuel and household bills have soared. In the week the price of petrol crashed through the £5-a-gallon barrier, many readers will find themselves much worse off than just seven days ago. [>
For the cost of living has jumped by 0.41 per cent since the Daily Express launched its price guide last week. People now have to fork out 11.52 per cent more on basic needs than they did 12 months ago. [>
Yet the Government tells us that annual inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index, is 2.5 per cent. The reality, however, is that prices of the most vital goods and services have been soaring way beyond this level. [>

Daily Express, in association with price comparison website

OUR WONDERFUL LEADERS.
01.05.08, 8:42pm
Why is everyone knocking our wonderful leaders.
Gordon and Alistair are truly wonderful.
Mervyn and all the top bankers are wonderful, wonderful people.
We should all learn to love them and trust them.
Allright, broken banks, house prices crashes, debt balloons, 11% inflation....these really are trivial things.
Just think how skillful these people are, and how we should all be proud of their great acheivements, which are....

THERE IS ONE HELL OF A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DICTATOR BROWN'S 2.5% INFLATION AND THE TRUE FIGURE OF 11.5% INFLATION
01.05.08, 1:30pm
NOT THAT DICTATOR BROWN WOULD KNOW HOW TO SPELL THE WORD "HONESTY".
What a gaggle of crooked, money-grabbing muppets we have running this country.
Every time I see Dictator Brown's smirking grin I want to be violently sick.

COST OF LIVING INLATION
01.05.08, 12:57pm
11.5% increase in the cost of living...No, No, No you must all have it wrong.. It is just the fear of such an increase because Mr Brown and all his well paid advisers and his govt. say it is 2.5% and they know that as they get in their filled up govt. limo's and get driven home to their central heated 2nd homes paid for by the tax payer on expenses. I would like to know the last time these wasters went shopping to see how much items have risen in the last year, not that it matters when the likes of Prescott claims £4000 FOR FOOD ON EXPENSES in one year and attempts to avoid paying the doubled council tax since his party came to power. 11.5% no Brown and his govt. would not tell us lies.....it must be 2.5%!!!!!!!!

Its just another revenue raiser along with the increase in road tax announced earlier this week..laughingly based on CO2 emissions for vehicles registered from 2001.
I really do think that Sneaky Gordon Brown and his fellow sneakees are out to bankrupt and weaken ordinary people in an attempt to intimidate and deter challenge or criticism against this rubbish governments policies.
Money is power!
