UK NEWSBORUC MAY FACE T-SHIRT CHARGES
Boruc wore Pope shirt Sunday May 4,2008 By Brendan AbbotCELTIC goalkeeper Artur Boruc could face prosecution for his T-shirt taunt at the end of last weekend’s Old Firm showdown, it emerged yesterday. The controversial Polish international tore off his jersey after the SPL game to reveal a shirt with “God Bless the Pope” written across it.
Now the player is being investigated by the Procurator Fiscal in Glasgow after a report was submitted by police.
Last night Rangers Assembly president Jim Templeton said: “I’m not surprised this has come to the attention of the authorities. Boruc did what he did for one reason and it was nothing to do with his faith. It was to provoke Rangers fans.”
Boruc escaped sanctions from the SFA and the SPL as Sunday’s Parkhead incident was not mentioned in the referee’s report. But he could now face charges if the Procurator Fiscal decides an offence has been committed.
A Crown Office spokesman confirmed yesterday: “Following an incident at the football match on Sunday, 27 April 2008, the Procurator Fiscal at Glasgow has asked the divisional
commander to investigate and submit a report. That does not imply that any view has been taken by the Fiscal.”
The goalie’s taunt after Celtic’s 3-2 win is not the first time he has been in trouble after an Old Firm clash.
He was reported for “provoking crowd trouble” through gestures towards Rangers fans in February 2006.
