SHOULD AVARICIOUS LABOUR CUT FUEL TAX?

Story Image

EXPENSIVE: A lorry driver fills up his tank

Sunday May 4,2008

SOARING fuel prices will allow Labour to siphon off a record £4million every hour in duty from motorists this year.

Accountants Grant Thornton forecast fuel taxes going to Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling will amount to £34billion.

Basic fuel duty – which is more than 50p per litre – will net £25.7billion.

Rising oil prices mean VAT on fuel is on course to net an additional £8.5billion. The total, equivalent to almost £4million an hour, led to fresh calls last night for Prime Minister Gordon Brown to act to slash duty.

Roger King, chief executive of the Road Haulage Association, described VAT on fuel as “the ultimate stealth tax”.

He urged the Government to cancel a 2p rise in duty in the autumn and to use VAT receipts to cap prices.

He also warned that protests by lorry drivers could turn violent. “People have to pay taxes but the amount the Government is taking from the motorist is utterly obscene,” he said.

SHOULD AVARICIOUS LABOUR CUT FUEL TAX.

25.05.08, 7:52pm

Ofcourse they should, I'm a self employed owner driver of a 38ton artic, it does on average 7 miles to the gallon, so for me to travel 7 miles it costs me nearly 6 quid, absolutely diabolical, disgusting, the wagon can generate about £60,000 a year of which the Government take about £38,000 in taxes, I take £15,000 and they take another £6,000 of that, the £7,000 thats left goes on servicing etc. so at the end of the day, I buy the wagon, tax and insure it, I do all the work, they get £44,000 and I get £9,000 should be the other way round.
These degenerates will never reduce the fuel tax, it's too much of an earner for them and they need the money to pay for the Civil Services Gold Plated pensions, I believe THAT now costs us £1trillion a year and is set to increase by £27 billion next year and £26 billion the year after that. Anyway, like someone else said, soon I won't be able to afford to go to work, so I'll just have to live off the state. Does that mean I'll have to vote Labour ?, Sorry, I'd rather starve.

CUTTING FUEL TAX - DOES GOV THINK WE'RE STUPID!!!

22.05.08, 8:09am

Tax shouldnt even be considered. I think UK people should be given a heck of a rebate!!

When pterol was 90 p a litre last year, the exchange rate was 1.7$ to the £

We havent been given the 0.3 cents in the pound as a credit towards keeping the fuel price in line......

Oil only contributes 30% towards the cost

a barrel of oil has 159 litres

Therefore 30% ish barrell of oil makes nearly 500 litres of petrol.....

so only if barrell goes up 10$ should we get 1 p on a litre!!!!!!!

iuncover this fiasco Express!!!!!

FUEL TAX !

20.05.08, 8:36am

Why do we have this tax, in fact why are we taxed more than any other European nation? This TAX-TAX -TAX system stops us being a major player in the world of global politics because we are laughed at, once we were the top dogs but now we have been overtaken by the so called developing nations who appear to have developed, leaving us behindn their wake.

If fuel costs were cut by reducing the amount of tax that we pay on it it would go a long way towards getting back on line but this government can only wage war on private enterprise profits they think that high taxes are justified and the only cut should be on their profits not taxes. If the system were run correctly taxes could be cut and profits still controlled in a fair manner, but Labour would not like that, it would mean them having to admit that they have been wrong for a long time. this is not the only unfair tax we pay, there are many, levied at the slightest excuse to introduce a new one every few days.

FOTTNOTE :

One of the most unfair is the TV licence fee. When the BBC was the only broadcasting system in this country and advertising was unheard of it was reasonable and justified to keep the service going. Now the BBC has diversified and introduced many more Radio and TV channels which get a considerable income from advertising the justification for a licence fee is questionable, Labours spin people will come up with a justification story from some where but I dare say that the huge amount of money raised by both fuel tax and TV licence fees will be diverted away from there original purpose. It is a Labour trick to get money for one purpose and use it for another.

YES, FUEL TAXES ARE AFFECTING EVERYONE...

14.05.08, 11:28am

but what can we do about it? We Brits are hopeless at complaining in an effective way simply because we are too polite to do so and the powers that be jolly well know it!

You cannot uninvent the motor car; it has been our vehicle of freedom for the last eighty years or so. It's all right for you London townies who can just pop on the tube or bendy bus but what about the suburbanites or the country folk who regard our cars as necessities rather than luxuries?

Why, oh why, do motor manufacturers still produce high performance large engined cars for our roads that have a 70 mph national limit? It's quite ironic that when we had no speed limits, the average car could only chug up to about 60 or 70 and then, only for brief periods. Now since 1966 when the dreadful 70 limit came in on a permanent basis, the performance of average family cars can exceed the ton and sustain that speed all day.

I remember when the M1 first opened, car engines were blowing up all along it because they just could not take the prolonged high speeds. I am not suggesting that we all go back to driving Morris Minors but why do you need an engine bigger than 1400 cc in a family car?

Be careful in Cyprus. They have a dire shortage of something more precious than petrol and that's water.
