LABOUR'S GREEN TAX WILL COST EVERY FAMILY £3,000

Sunday May 4,2008

By Jason Groves, Political Correspondent

LABOUR’S new green targets will cost every family in Britain more than £3,000, a Government dossier has warned.

The decision by ministers to sign up to “unachievable” EU pledges on renewable energy will leave taxpayers with a £75billion bill.

Most of this will be passed on to householders in higher costs.

A typical family will see its fuel bills soar by £214 a year as power firms switch to expensive technology, such as windfarms, to hit the targets by 2020.

However, the report, slipped out without publicity, warns that the final bill is likely to be higher still, as costs such as the price of upgrading the national grid to cope with new energy sources were not included.

The study, carried out by respected energy consultants Poyry for the  Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, also reveals the targets will cost Britain far more than any other EU country.

Neil O’Brien, director of the think tank Open Europe, said ministers had failed to understand the implications for ordinary families when they signed Britain up to the agreement.

He said civil servants were “in despair” about how Britain was going to meet a target which many experts believe is unachievable.

He added: “People’s electricity bills are going to soar because of this EU target. The EU have chosen the least effective and most costly way to go green and we are all going to have to pay as a result.

“Incredibly, the Government don’t seem to have realised what they were signing up to.

“Britain seems to have got a raw deal, paying in more than any other country while other countries will actually make money out of it. We are handing over a huge amount of money and it’s not clear that we will get anything for it.

“Civil servants are in despair about how on earth they are supposed to meet this target and how much it is all going to cost.”

The EU targets, agreed by former Premier Tony Blair last year, will force the EU to produce 20 per cent of its energy from renewable sources like windfarms in the next 12 years.

Britain’s target is lower at 15 per cent but because the UK has such a low base of renewable energy the cost here will be far higher – almost double the cost expected in France and Germany. On current trends renewable energy will meet just five per cent of Britain’s needs.

The report suggests the cost of reducing carbon emissions across the EU will be about £39 a ton but the price in the UK will be about £65 a ton.

Ministers are planning to issue a consultation paper in the summer looking at how this can be massively ramped up. They are also hoping to be able to buy renewable energy “credits” from other EU countries that will have less trouble meeting their targets but it is not yet clear that this will be possible.

A spokesman for the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform last night acknowledged that the aims were “very challenging” but said the detail would not be finalised until next year.

The spokesman added that the Government remained committed to tackling fuel poverty, insisting: “This will become even more important as necessary climate change policies put further upward pressure on prices to the consumer.”

The new report warns that meeting the targets is likely to pose huge practical challenges. The targets assume that biofuels, which currently account for less than one per cent of transport needs, will account for 10 per cent by 2020. Most of this supply will have to be imported but rising concern about using land to grow fuel instead of crops means it may be impossible to meet at any cost.

Public opposition to windfarms has made it difficult for the Government to hit targets and any other forms of renewable energy remain largely untested.

The drive for renewables was dealt a further blow last week when it emerged that Shell wants to pull out of a scheme to build the world’s biggest offshore windfarm in the Thames estuary.

DICTATOR PRUDENCE BROWN WILL DEFINITELY NOT BE GETTING "MORE THAN £3,000" FROM ME BY WAY OF "GREEN TAX"

04.05.08, 3:44pm

I have got news for DICTATOR PRUDENCE BROWN.

I will be joining the other 220,000 individuals in England this year, who are packing their bags and deserting this sinking ship.

It must be wonderful for Dictator Prudence Brown - no rent to pay - no utility bills to pay - no council tax to pay - no TV license to pay and piles of other expenses (including expenses for FOOD) and it beggars belief just what the hell he can spend his obscene salary on.

Dictator Prudence Brown will follow Blair into the land of milk and honey. Blair now has SIX, I repeat SIX HOMES.

I'll tell you something, Dictator Prudence Brown - just in case you are blind as well as deaf - the public have had enough of your thieving.

MILLIONS of people in England are living in poverty - they have been screwed to the ground with tax, tax, tax, tax and more tax.

Now you want another £3,000 from the starving masses, who are barely able to keep warm in their own homes and who have resorted to shoplifting food, because they can no longer afford to buy essentials.

If my memory serves me right, there is a large manhole at the end of Downing Street.

Do EVERYONE A GREAT FAVOUR Dictator Prudence Brown....yes, how did you guess.....TAKE A JUMP.

Are you listening Dictator Prudence Brown? Oh! I am sorry, I didn't know you were on the telephone to Mugabe.

BROWN and MUGABE. What a fine double-act that would make.

Like two (rotten) peas in a pod.

SPINELESS NEW LABOUR

04.05.08, 3:06pm

Lots of homes where I live still have single-glazed windows, and many of them are occupied by people who lack the money to pay for double-glazing. A lot of it is social housing

Instead of investing in costly wind farms which nobody likes, how about paying for the nation's housing stock to be properly insulated?

New Labour doesn't care about real solutions. They care only about pandering to the whims of pompous EU mandarins.
