BORIS BANS DRINKING ON THE TUBE

Story Image

BANNED: Drinking will be outlawed on public transport from June 1.

Thursday May 8,2008

DRINKING alcohol on public transport in London will be outlawed from June 1.

New Mayor Boris Johnson moved swiftly yesterday to make good one of his election pledges.

From next month drinking alcohol or even carrying open bottles or cans will be banned on the Tube and Docklands Light Railway, buses and trams.

Transport staff or police will be able to ask people with open drinks to leave.

From next year a new bylaw will make it a criminal offence. Posters already warn that the ban is on the way.

The pledge was a key part of Mr Johnson’s manifesto. But it opened up his first possible clash with transport unions who called it “unworkable”.

Mr Johnson said: “Too many people tell me they are fed up with finding themselves on a Tube or bus and having someone swigging alcohol while displaying threatening and intimidating behaviour.’’

The policy is part of his belief that driving out so-called “minor crime’’ will cut more serious offences.

A GOOD MOVE

09.05.08, 9:25am

Now that smoking has been banned in all enclosed spaces, maybe it's time that consumption of alcohol is banned in all open spaces. Excessive consumption of alcohol leads to illness, violence, crime and early death!
If you have ever been on a long journey and shared a table with a loud 'in your face' drunk telling the same vapid anecdotes over and over, telling you that you are his friend and breathing his alcoholic breath in your direction you will applaud Boris's move with gusto.
It's about time some limitations were put on this dangerous DRUG. It may affect the sensible users but then again, no pain, no gain.

LONDONS PUBLIC TRANSPORT DRINKING BAN

08.05.08, 11:53am

As banning drinking on Londons public transport was a key part of the Mayors election manifesto I would have thought this was a part of voting for Boris as Mayor. He should be congratulated on the speedy way he has acted on that promise. As for the comments of who will enforce this ban the new Mayor has promised more transport police to make London travel safer. The ill judged comments of the likes of the union leader about trains of football supporters hitting the city, this is already policed and alcohol confiscated at stations etc. by the police now, as supporters see at every high profile game in London now. I say give the Mayor support in these early stages in the prompt way he is acting in the interests of London voters. IT IS CALLED DEMOCRACY!!
