RANGERS BOSS PLANS CASH SPLASH

PLANS: Walter Smith

Friday May 9,2008

By Iain Macfarlane

RANGERS boss Walter Smith has vowed to use a share of the club's £20 million Euro jackpot to add flair to his team and keep hold of star man Carlos Cuellar.

Smith is tantalisingly close to winning an unprecedented four trophies in his first full season back at Ibrox.

And the Rangers gaffer wants to keep the bulk of his team together for next season - and use the riches gleaned from the run to the UEFA Cup Final to add some class to his starting line-up.

Newcastle United are keen on Spanish stopper Cuellar and Rangers are bracing themselves for a summer bid for him and the hero keeper Allan McGregor from Premiership predators.

But Smith is in no mood to sell and reckons the UEFA Cup run has allowed him to look at snapping up a better standard of player.

Smith said: "It's important for the progress of any team we keep the players together. If the stock of our team is rising it's natural that other teams will look, but hopefully we can find the wherewithal to keep the vast majority of the squad.

"I hope we can fend off offers if it's right for us to do so. We want to improve - regardless of the result of the UEFA Cup Final - but i don't know how many players will come in.

"The fact we're still building after a year means there may be a few more changes to be made. But this European run has taken a bit of the financial pressure off. Now we can maybe look at getting one or two of the players we maybe otherwise couldn't have afforded."

Smith is set to field his strongest team against Dundee United tomorrow in the SPL - because he can't afford to have one eye on the UEFA Cup Final when there's a league title to be won.

And one man at the heart of the Rangers defence tomorrow and possibly for another year is Davie Weir. The 37-year-old stopper wil sit down with Smith and decide his future after the season
