Hammerton and Kirkham are on a mission tonight

Friday May 9,2008

TONY Kirkham is the man in charge of 14,000 trees in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew and is passionate about “nature’s living works of art”.

In this, their second series, Kirkham and tree-climber Jon Hammerton (both pictured) are on a mission to discover whether we still value the trees that have shaped the landscape in Britain.

Kirkham explains how he wants to make British trees matter to people and meets some of those who are making the most of the changing face of forestry by using forests as a recreational resource.

In Yorkshire’s Dalby Forest, Kirkham and Hammerton meet Tristan Mayhew, the inventor of Go Ape, an attraction which sees paying visitors venture high up into the branches to experience a tree-top adventure climb with breathtaking views.

In Scotland they talk to Helen Emery who is licensed to use the Caledonian Forest for dog sledding, and they try their hand at the exhilarating sport.
