SMITH NAMED MANAGER OF THE YEAR

BEST BOSS: Walter Smith

Saturday May 10,2008

By Iain Macfarlane

RANGERS boss Walter Smith last night won the biggest personal prize of his career and insisted his players' bottle won't crash as they chase glory and trophies of their own.

Smith was named the Scottish Football Writers' Manager of the Year  after helping Rangers reach the UEFA Cup final, land the CIS Cup and remain favourites to win the SPL and Scottish Cup.

But while Smith will collect his award at a gala dinner on Sunday night, the Ibrox boss is adamant that his players are showing no signs of wilting in the final furlongs of a gruelling season as they still chase the "fab four".

On his own award, Smith said: "I never doubted the football writers' judgement! Seriously, though it's always nice to win a personal award. I won it once before but it probably means a bit more now than it did previously.

"It's not that I took the first one lightly, but coming back to Rangers for a second spell here brought new challenges and this makes the award notable in my eyes regardless of what happens between now and the end of the season."

Now with the three trophies on the line, Smith reckons his players have great mental strength to pull through starting with today's SPL clash against Dundee United at Ibrox.

He added: ""Even those of us who have been chasing trophies before have never faced a time like this.

"This game against United  - on a Saturday morning - is the fourth game in nine days and they are coming thick and fast.

"People are looking to the end of the season but this spell we're in now - from the Fiorentina game last Thursday - is very difficult for players to handle.

"We have to speak to the players and make sure they are not getting to the point where they feel the strain.

"The pressure is there and at this stage of the season you have to show that you can handle it.

"The other night against Motherwell we showed a good reaction even late in the game. Being at home the crowd play a vital part at this stage of the season.

"It was apparent against Motherwell when they got behind us after half-time. There was a tremendous atmosphere generated and that helps all the players at a late stage in the game.

"It's no co-incidence that we had a better second half against Motherwell and more chances to get a goal."

Smith will have Lee McCulloch back in his plans today although the big Scot will probably start on the bench. Charlie Adam could start and Damarcus Beasley is in with a shout of playing after five months out with knee ligament damage
