HIBS WON'T WRITE OFF EUROPE YET

HOPEFUL: Mixu Paatelainen

Saturday May 10,2008

By Ally Guthrie

Mixu Paatelainen last night rapped back at Mark McGhee – We deserve a place in Europe as much as Motherwell.

And the Hibs boss aims to prove that point by halting Celtic’s late charge for three-in-a-row championships at Parkhead tomorrow.

Well manager McGhee reckons his Steelmen should be rewarded with a UEFA Cup ticket for their work this season.

But it could yet go down to a last day showdown for Europe between the pair at Easter Road.

“I heard Mark McGhee's comments saying if they beat Aberdeen on Saturday and we lose on Sunday, then that's it,” said Mixu.

“As long as we don't lose we are still in the race going into the last game.

“If Mark McGhee says they deserve it, at the end of the day, that means nothing.  Whoever qualifies for the UEFA Cup deserves it, it's as simple as that. I wish that club all the best - I hope it's us.

“Rangers have just beaten Motherwell, so everything is possible.

“We need to take a result from Celtic Park, that’s for sure and that's what we are going to concentrate on. Dundee United are still there as well.”

Mixu heaped praise on Celtic midfielder Barry Robson and Oz striker Scott McDonald, but reckoned the crowd be a spur for Hibs.

“We can take advantage if the crowd get edgy if the game is going our way.

“I am sure Celtic will come out strongly and try and score early goals to settle the game and try to control the tempo.

“We have other plans. We need to defend well because they have powerful strikers and McDonald is in very good goal-scoring form.  Robson adds a lot to the midfield and he has done tremendously well.

“I think that's one of the reasons they are winning.”
