WARFARE: Alex Ferguson

Saturday May 10,2008

By Richard Tanner

Sir Alex Ferguson has continued his tit-for-tat psychological warfare with Avram Grant as the build-up to the Premier League title race reaches its climax.

Manchester United manager Ferguson ensured his presence will be felt at Stamford Bridge tomorrow as well as at the JJB Stadium, when he questioned Bolton’s commitment to beat Chelsea.

He said: “People have been questioning the integrity of Wigan, but nobody has questioned or even mentioned Bolton.”

Chelsea boss Grant and skipper John Terry had expressed fears that Wigan – whose chairman Dave Whelan is a friend of Ferguson’s and manager Steve Bruce a United old boy – would not make much of a fight when United only need to match Chelsea’s result to win the title on goal difference.

But yesterday Ferguson was intent on turning the tables as the war of nerves escalated ahead of what is likely to be the tightest championship finish for 19 years.

He said: “You’ve got Wigan players saying they want to beat Manchester United and I have no problem about that, we’re a big club. Then you hear about Bolton players out celebrating all week and it amazes me.”

Bolton boss Gary Megson hit back, saying: “The players were not celebrating. They went out together, which they have done in the past on a Monday night.

"Since then they have been preparing properly.”
