TORRES: Record-breaker

Monday May 12,2008

Tottenham 0 Liverpool 2

THE future may be less clear as boardroom battles rumble like distant thunderclouds this summer. But Rafa Benitez gave a precise and ultimately positive assessment of Liverpool’s season after victory in the sunshine of White Hart Lane yesterday.

Goals from Andriy Voronin and Fernando Torres gave Benitez an armful of statistics to back up claims that, overall, this has been a good campaign.

“We finished fourth, scored 119 goals [in all competitions], the keeper has another clean sheet and takes the Golden Gloves for the third year in a row, Torres scored the most goals in a first Premier League season and we have 76 points,” he said. “OK so we did not win trophies which is always a bad situation but we have played good attacking football and all this shows we are progressing.”

The startling debut campaign of Torres has given Benitez most succour during a year spent glowering at the club’s owners. Torres’ latest goal was his 33rd in all competitions and saw him break the debut season record of Ruud van Nistelrooy. Benitez added: “He is a young player, but he is a hungry player who wants to be successful.”

“There was nothing much riding on it for either side,” said Juande Ramos, as defeat left his Spurs side with just 46 points, in the bottom half of the table, but with the Carling Cup in their cabinet. As Benitez would no doubt agree, a positive season.
