Burrell, recorded bragging he had not told the “whole truth” at Princess Diana’s inquest earlier this year, is said to be “elated” after the Metropolitan Police confirmed it would not be pursuing a perjury case.

Now pals say the Florida-based Burrell wants a Heather Mills-style media blitz on US TV to defend his reputation. “Paul hated having to lie low when the threat of perjury was hanging over him,” says a friend.

“Now he feels he can be back in the public eye and speak out against those who have been calling for his head.”

Burrell has made millions out of his royal connections, including two books on the Princess and flogging his wine and furniture collections.

When confronted over allegations that he had lied at the inquest, he insisted he had been drunk, prompting him to show off.

Our mole adds: “When Paul goes on TV, he will accept he did a foolish thing. But he’s confident the American public are still on his side, unlike the British. He’s looking forward to getting on with his career again, and this is the ideal way to kick-start that.”
