LIVID LEVEIN IN NEW REF ATTACK

ANGRY: Craig Levein

Tuesday May 13,2008

By Gary Keown

CRAIG LEVEIN sparked off a bitter war of words with the SFA last night by claiming blunder ref Mike McCurry congratulated Rangers ace Nacho Novo for scoring against Dundee United.

The Tannadice manager was already in for a hammering from Hampden bosses after savaging McCurry for turning down a stonewall penalty and disallowing a clear goal in his side's 3-1 Ibrox loss on Saturday.

However, he has fired a second explosive salvo at McCurry, who admits he got both decisions wrong, and is clearly spoiling for a fight with the game's leaders.

SFA chief executive Gordon Smith has slammed Levein for calling McCurry a bottle merchant who won't give big decisions against Rangers and filing an official complaint over his performance.

However, Levein has also taken a pop at the ex-radio pundit for getting his priorities all wrong since he stepped into the corridors of power.

Levein blasted: “When Novo got his second goal, McCurry said to him: 'Good goal'.

“That just says it all.

“I did not see him do the same when Mark de Vries got our goal with a great header. Why's that?

“I have lost all respect for Mike McCurry.

“We all know that, when we play the Old Firm in a big match for them, we are not going to get any decisions.

“Gordon Smith has launched a campaign to cut out diving.

“If there is any league in the world where that is not a problem, it has to be ours.

“Instead of needless moves like that, he should be putting his own house in order and sorting out referees.”
