The police operation to prevent known troublemakers flying to Russia has already begun. Plain clothes officers will also be mingling with fans at Wednesday night's match.

Plain-clothed football intelligence and uniformed police officers are being stationed at Manchester and Heathrow airports to prevent anyone known to have convictions for violence or football-related disorder from travelling to Moscow.

Eighteen specialised UK police officers attending the match will be "spotting" any English supporters who cause trouble or engage in anti-social behaviour.

Two of these are from the UK football policing unit. The Metropolitan Police and Greater Manchester Police are sending eight specialised officers each.

Chief Inspector Robert Tinsley, from Manchester Airport police station, said: "As with all operations like this, we are sending out a clear message to people intending to travel to commit violence to think again.

"In past operations, the vast majority of people approached by officers have been genuine supporters who were co-operative and understanding, but we have been successful in stopping a number of known hooligans travelling."

He said the initiative, known as Operation Chart, aims to prevent troublemakers ruining the reputation of genuine football fans.

Fans are being asked to arrive early at airports as long queues are anticipated.

Supporters will also not be able to travel if they do not have a match ticket, their passport and a flight ticket. They will not be allowed to take flagpoles on to flights and anyone who has had too much to drink will not be allowed to board their flight.
