Many people still living in caravans after last summer's floods

Tuesday May 20,2008

More than 1,400 households are still living in caravans following last summer's floods - and more than 5,500 are not fully back in their homes, the Government has said.

Floods recovery minister John Healey promised affected families they had not been forgotten as he praised local authorities and insurance firms for the work they have done following the deluges which hit many parts of England in June and July.

But he also said the remaining affected householders were becoming frustrated about the pace of repairs to their homes.

Mr Healy said the number of households living in caravans had fallen by more than 40% between March and the end of April - down from 2,400 to 1,429.

But he said about 5,650 households are not fully back in their homes.

The minister also said about one in eight of these households do not have insurance.

According to the new figures, the areas with the most households still displaced are Hull (1,989 at least partly out of their homes and 641 in caravans), the East Riding of Yorkshire (1,109 and 323) and Tewkesbury, in Gloucestershire, (388 and 114).

Mr Healey described the response to the floods - which saw 48,000 homes affected - as one of the biggest operations since the Second World War.

He said the total Government support to date for flood-hit communities was £118 million.

Mr Healey is due to visit families still living in caravans in the village of Toll Bar, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, as well as those who have moved back into their refurbished homes.

FLOOD VICTIMS IN CARAVANS

20.05.08, 11:02am

Typical of Nu Lab, go where a soundbite and TV exposure is, (China and Burma),but they don't seem to keen on appearing with local flood victims. I bet this lousy useless govt. do not even afford our flood victims in caravans the same 'human rights' as the so called gypsy travellers get as they blatantly ignore planning laws up and down the country along with trespass of other peoples lands if they so desire. Time this govt. got a grip of the flood victims who it appears would have been better of if Brown had NOT put off his holiday to deal with their problems, come to think of it thetre is not much crowing from NU Lab about the victims as at the time of the floods, except the extra VAT the disaster brought in!!!!

Well not to worry, Standing up and appealing about help for China's Earthquake, The Flooding in the Irawaddy Delta and Africa's problems gives the PM a much better bandwagon on the World Political Map than would be if he were to "Bat for his own Countries Problems" doesnt it ?

NOT BEING FUNNY HERE....

20.05.08, 8:51am

but a disaster looms abroad, and the government leap into action.

Yes, the disasters in Burma and China are a tragedy, and yes, those people need our immediate help, but one would have thought a level playing field was in order.

Don't our own people count for anything either?

But stupidly I forgot, there are no by-elections in East Yorkshire or Gloucestershire are there?
