CAN-CAN GIRL: Karen Thomson

Wednesday May 21,2008

By Kevin Turner

THE Tennent's Lager pin-ups have now achieved a lofty social standing – at one of Scotland’s foremost seats of learning.

Ann, Linda, Penny, Violet and the rest will form an integral part of the Scottish Brewing Archive at Glasgow University.

They will join records, books and advertising material gifted by the brewing industry. Archivist Iain Russell said: “The whole concept was for these cans to be geared up for export for servicemen.

“Tennent’s started off with scenes of the UK, such as Trafalgar Square and the Tower of London.

“But the squaddies were not interested in Trafalgar Square, it was the woman  at the fountain they were interested in. So the lager lovelies were born.” Other famous names from Scotland’s breweries feature in the collection.

These include George Youngers of Alloa, Belhaven, Scottish Brewers and Scottish and Newcastle. The brewing artefacts will be included in the Scottish Business Archive in the University’s Archive Services.
