It was locked up in Chiapas state, Mexico, in cells normally used to punish drunks, and will stay behind bars until its owner agrees to pay the victims’ medical bills.

Police officer Sinar Gomez said: “Around here, if someone commits a crime they are jailed – no matter who they are.”

The donkey bit Genaro Vazquez, 63, in the chest then kicked Andres Hernandez, 52, as he went to the rescue, fracturing his ankle.

“All of a sudden, the animal was on top of us like it was rabid,” said Mr Hernandez.

It took six men to control the enraged donkey, said police.

Owner Mauro Gutierrez said  he would try to reach a friendly arrangement to pay the men’s bills, estimated at £210.

It’s not the first time animals have been put in jail in Chiapas. A bull was locked up in March after devouring corn crops and destroying two wooden vending stands. And a dog was jailed two years ago after biting someone.
