£5M BOOST TO KNIFE CRIME FIGHT

Jacqui Smith aims to tackle the scourge of knife crime

Thursday May 22,2008

The Government is to inject £5 million into a new fight against knife crime, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is to announce.

A number of towns and cities will be selected to run pilot schemes designed to combat the scourge of knife-related crimes after a series of high-profile murders.

It comes the day after senior judges expressed their concern over the "escalating and grave" problem of knives and other offensive weapons being carried on Britain's streets.

The Home Office will also publish results of a project launched last September to crack down on gun and gang crime in London, Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham.

A Home Office spokeswoman said early figures showed the Tackling Gangs Action Plan had been a success.

"We are not saying it has solved gun and gang crime but it is an indication of what a focused effort can achieve," she said. "We are happy with how it has gone."

Figures on the number of offences and injuries caused by gun-related crime before and after the initiative - due to be published later - are expected to show a significant fall.

On the new knives scheme, the spokeswoman said it will be set up in major metropolitan areas in England and Wales, in consultation with the Association of Chief Police Officers. The locations have not yet been decided, she added.

Its launch follows outrage over a spate of knife murders, many involving teenagers in London.

Separate funds will also be announced to continue the guns and gangs project in the four cities on a rolling basis.

£5M BOOST TO KNIFE CRIME FIGHT

A serious waste of public money. What they will not acknowledge is that the basic cause is the change in the demographics of the country due to 40 years of immigration. The politicians have stolen Britain and given it to foreigners.

JACQUI SMITH CUTS NIL CREDIBILITY IN "PILOTING" YET ANOTHER BRAINLESS WASTE OF TAXPAYER'S CASH

22.05.08, 10:27am

What a hard-faced incompetent Jacqui Smith is.

She will be remembered as the worst Home Secretary the UK has ever had - and THAT is saying something.

5M FOR KNIVES?

22.05.08, 10:18am

Here we go again! Another useless cabinet minister rushing around trying to stick plasters over yet another government created catastrophe.
Don't start at rock bottom and cure the problem by hard work - Oh! No! , just throw our money at it and get the spin doctors to work.
This is what Nu Labour calls "robust action"!!

A BETTER RESPONSE

22.05.08, 9:47am

A better response would be to burn all the excess paperwork that has been dumped on the police in the past eleven years, thereby allowing police officers to go out and tackle crime.

Nu labour's response to every problem throw money at it, they have no idea how to deal with simple problems. This has got to be the worst government in history.
