ROONEY: I DIDN’T GET SHIRTY

SALUTE: Wayne Rooney

Friday May 23,2008

By RICHARD TANNER

WAYNE ROONEY insists he did not throw down his shirt in fury after being substituted and instead saluted Manchester United’s nerveless quartet of new boys.

Rooney, disappointed to be substituted, took off his rain-soaked jersey as he walked to his seat  but said: “I didn’t throw my shirt down. I took my shirt off to put a dry top on to keep myself warm.”

He was full of admiration for his replacement Nani plus Carlos Tevez, Owen Hargreaves and Anderson, who netted in the penalty shoot-out.

He said: “Anderson, Tevez, Hargreaves and Nani did brilliantly. They showed their confidence in the way they took their penalties.

“They are young and this success will settle them down. Next season they’ll be even better.”

United’s Premier and Champions League double earned Rooney’s former club Everton a £1.5million bonus under the arrangements of his transfer to Old Trafford.

And he believes the fact he has now collected four trophies in three years justifies his decision to quit Merseyside.

“It’s been what I hoped for,” he said. “You could see the team was getting better over the first couple of seasons.

“We were unlucky last season in the Champions League but we’ve taken it a step further.

“Now we must build on this. We’ve some great young players and want to win more trophies. Chelsea are always tough and it was a difficult game. It could have gone either way and no one could have complained about the other team winning. We are just happy we did it.

“Chelsea hit the post a couple of times but we had the better opportunities to win.

“We were upbeat at half-time. Even though we’d just conceded, we felt we were in control and that Chelsea rarely troubled us.”
