MOVING ON: Mark McGhee

Saturday May 24,2008

By SCOTT BURNS

MOTHERWELL last night turned down Hearts permission to speak to Mark McGhee.

The Fir Park board knocked back the official approach from their SPL rivals but are well aware they are fighting a losing battle to keep their manager.

Express Sport revealed yesterday that McGhee has already agreed a £8,000-a-week deal, via agents, with Tynecastle chairman Vladimir Romanov to takeover the Tynecastle hotseat.

Well chairman John Boyle has made it clear he wants to keep his boss and certainly doesn’t want to lose him to one of their SPL rivals.

The Fir Park powerbroker is also well aware that moves have been going on behind the scenes but isn’t prepared to let him go without a fight.

Hearts are prepared to make a second approach but will now need McGhee to tell Boyle that he wants to leave.

Motherwell won’t give him permission unless agree to pay the £300,000 compensation fee for McGhee and assistant Scott Leitch.

That could lead to the pair walking out on their contracts - similar to the current situation youth supremo Chris McCart, who is set to join Celtic.

Motherwell are already looking at fall back plans with names such as Paul Lambert and ex-Norwich boss Peter Grant all being considered.

Former Plymouth and Hibs manager Bobby Williamson has also thrown his name into the hat.
