HIP HOP FUELS GUN CRIME, SAYS STAR

Tricky accused hip hop of fuelling gun crime

Monday May 26,2008

Music star Tricky has hit out at hip hop for fuelling gun and knife crime.

He said some parts of the UK were now worse than the notorious Bronx.

The British Mercury Prize-nominated star, real name Adrian Thaws, told Uncut magazine: "I love hip hop. But it has to take some responsibility for the gun culture we've got over here. We're getting super-violent."

He added: "You can walk around the Bronx for days on end and nobody bothers you. In England, you can say the wrong thing in a pub and, before you know it, you've got a bottle over your head or a bullet in your brain. English people have got quicker tempers."

Tricky, 40, also blames modern-day wardrobes for today's violence.

The musician, singer and producer said: "What have they got to get them through hard times? We had punk rock and ska and bands that made you feel you could do anything.

"We were into clothes in a big way. Anything to take our minds off the stress. They don't have to think about getting dressed. They get the baseball cap and trainers on, that's all it is.

"But they've got nothing to take the pressure off. That's maybe why they are more violent than we were. That and the fact they have access to serious artillery.

"We used to throw stones at each other. Now they shoot bullets at each other. Hip hop has got a lot to do with that."

Tricky, whose release Maxinquaye was named the 36th Greatest British Album Ever by Q Magazine, added: "I'm a nice, peaceful guy but I wouldn't stop to help (US President) Bush, no way. I'd like to torture him actually."

AND I AGREE WITH YOU 100% REALISTIC.....

26.05.08, 8:49pm

As I said, they should never have done away with it in the first place, and I would love to see it brought back. NS shaped men, built character, and gave a sense of pride in oneself and respect for the fellow man.

The problem is, could it work today? With the PC culture. The sergeant bawls at one of the little cherubs, and before he knows it, some slick human rights lawyer is on the case, pressing for damages for 'hurt feelings' or some load of tosh.

It does work in other countries, but it has to be said, those countries have by and large, got a grip on their youth culture, whereas we........!

Throw the PC crap away, and it could work here. Somehow though, wishing for a return to NS, we're more than likely to be onto a losing wicket. The MoD would be very unlikely to want conscripts, and the government would be very unlikely to fund such a move, seeing as they've successively spent the last three decades destroying and downsizing our armed forces.

Then again, we might be pleasantly surprised one day.

REPLY TO VELCRO205....NATIONAL SERVICE WORKS VERY SUCCESSFULLY IN OTHER COUNTRIES

26.05.08, 7:53pm

cheers for your message in reply to mine (I think), but why is it that National Service works remarkably well in other countries we should be forcing these young people to go through all the training and hard work that needs to take pklace and I think its more about instilling discipline and a sesne of belonging to this country for what it really is.......

The sooner we bring back National Service the better....it will teach these teenagers a thing or two about what life is all about?

I'D BE ALL FOR NATIONAL SERVICE.....

26.05.08, 2:06pm

in fact, it should never have been done away with in the first place. Maybe we wouldn't be in this mess today.

I've spoken to members of the armed forces in the past though, and their views on NS, were that they would rather have someone next to them who'd joined up under his (or her) own choice and could therefore be relied upon, than some chav who didn't give a monkeys about anyone but themself.

I think this is why the MoD has always rejected a return to NS. They'd rather have a force of professionals, than a force of conscripts.

Something needs to be done though, because this country is a complete balls up at present. The first thing would be to sling all the human rights PC crap out of the window. The whole system is ineffectual and rotten to the core.

TIME TO BRING BACK NATIONAL SERVICE FOR TEENAGERS!

26.05.08, 12:50pm

Welll alll I can say is that its about time to bring back NATIONAL SERVICE to these shores, particularly for each and every teenager?

And as for the hip hop its a red herring I think there are more serious issues at play within this country than just listening to hip hop music?

These stars need to live in the real world for once....its so easy to blame something so inificial as music......what happened to music bringing people and communities together then?

What a load of jumbo!

THE WAY TO STOP KNIFE CRIME.

26.05.08, 11:45am

ANY BODY HAVING A KNIFE IN HIS POCKET SHOULD BE SEND TO AN ARMY OR RAF CAMP WITH BARBED WIRE AROUND IT. THEY SHOULD BE MADE TO WORK FOR 10 DAYS AND THEN LET OUT. THEY COULD USE THE WOODEN SHACKS WE USED TO SLEEP IN DURING THE WAR. NO TELEVISION EITHER. THE BLAME IS ON THTHE PARENTS OF THESE BOYS AND GIRLS. THEY SHOULD START OF ON COUNCIL ESTATES. THE POLICE SHOULD START DOING IT NOW. AND THERE WOULD BE LESS MURDERS IN THE FUTURE. WE ARE GETTING TOO SOFT. THE POLITICIANS ARE USELESS NOW. REGARDS. HAL

OUR RULING CLASSES FUEL GUN CRIMES...HIP HOP EXPLAINS IT!

26.05.08, 10:22am

listening to hip hop does infact explain the deep rooted problems many of us face today...far from fuelling the violence, the gun crimes, the need the young find to carry knives and other weapons....the young can relate to the reality that rappers express in thier tracks...it is the ignorance of the 'fat catz' that run the music industry that fuels the violence...by making money out of the 'hip hop' culture that they are so keen to condem...
