PROPERTY: BUILD A NEW LIFE IN THE COUNTRY - WAS IT WORTH IT? 8PM, FIVE

Story Image

The suave George Clarke

Thursday May 29,2008

THE deliciously suave George Clarke revisits some of the families featured in earlier series who decided to up sticks from the city to the country to transform their quality of life and build a new home in the process.

Tonight he travels to Scotland to catch up with Michael and Jenny Wilmer, who sold their family home in Buckinghamshire and bought a historic 600-year-old ruin near the fishing town of Kirkcudbright, which they planned to transform into a four-bedroom farmhouse.

However, building their dream home looked rather dicey from the start as the remains of the property lacked a roof, walls, plumbing and electricity.

The couple budgeted £90,000 on the rebuild but structural repairs alone cost £100,000, with a similar amount needed for the interior.

With spiralling costs and the sheer scale of work needed to get this project off the ground, Clarke is hoping the pair succeeded.
