GO GREEN WITH YOUR JEANS

Recycle your jeans

Tuesday April 17,2007

CUT your carbon footprint – by turning your old blue jeans into “green” sandals.

Post your well-worn denims off to the family shoemaking firm owned by Mike Stables and his wife Lynne and in a week they will be transformed into eco-friendly sandals.

The couple’s daughter Cat said: “More than 99 per cent of all footwear sold in the UK has travelled half way around the world before it gets to the consumer. Our sandals are made locally and so have the lowest transport footprint.”

The firm, based in Askham in Furness, Cumbria, says recycling textiles saves on pesticides, fertilisers, chemicals, energy and water.

Mr Stables said: “If everyone in the UK recycled just one item of clothing a year the amount of processing water saved would fill an average reservoir.”

Cat said the £45 sandals should also appeal to vegans as they contain no animal by-products and consist just of the jeans, synthetic soles, metal buckles, sewing thread and woven labels.
