LABOUR PLANS FUEL HELP FOR POOR

Story Image

Labour is to announce plans to help the fuel poor

Friday May 30,2008

New measures aimed at helping vulnerable and elderly people with their fuel bills are to be announced by the Government.

The proposals will see assistance given to households to improve their energy efficiency, cut costs and ensure they are on the best value tariff with their gas and electricity providers.

But campaigners criticised the plan for being a mere "reshuffling" of old ideas that did not go far enough to alleviate fuel poverty.

Fuel poverty is said to occur when a household pays more than 10% of its income on energy bills.

Among the measures to be announced is a pilot scheme to ensure people applying for Warm Front grants are referred to their energy supplier for tariff advice.

In addition £150,000 will be put into the rolling out of watchdog Ofgem's national Citizens Advice Bureau awareness campaign on social assistance for the vulnerable.

Ministers also pledged £3 million as part of the low carbon building programme to encourage microgeneration - small scale alternative energy schemes - among fuel poor communities.

Environment Minister Phil Woolas said: "Household bills are rising and purse strings are tightening. Encouraging energy efficiency is crucial because it really does cut costs - especially for those who can least afford energy price hikes.

"These new measures will make homes across the country more energy efficient and give people at risk of fuel poverty a boost where they need it most. Fuel poverty isn't just a winter issue - it is about working all year round to improve the homes of some of the most vulnerable people in this country."

Responding to the announcement Kate Jopling, head of public affairs at Help the Aged, said: "While it is welcome news that the Government is moving in the right direction on fuel poverty, this initiative does not go nearly far enough to deal with the looming fuel poverty crisis."

HERE IS A NOVEL IDEA ?

30.05.08, 12:00pm

Why not dismantle the houses of Parliment, you would be able supply the 'Poor' with months of free fuel ,

Then maybe you could hand over all your expense sheets, that woulod keep the whole Nation in fuel for the fires for at least one Winter?

Perhaps you could even throw on old Charlie Kennedy, now that fire would take months to burn out.

Just A thought ?

MEALY MOUTHED WORDS INDEED FLETTON

30.05.08, 10:03am

Nothing short of a re-shuffling of EXACTLY WHAT IS AVAILABLE AT PRESENT. Two years ago I applied for all sorts of Warm Front grants. I was visited by Jobsworths on three occasions. They authorised that I be given TWO low-energy lightbulbs - which I can but for .49p locally anyway - God-knows how much it cost in administration fees/expenses for me to be given TWO lightbulbs. Meanwhile, another electricity bill hits the doormat. £220.00 in cold blood - and that is WITHOUT KEEPING WARM IN MY HOME IN THE WINTER.

Yes, we need a Referendum on the EU NOW.

Yes, get our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Yes, abolish VAT on domestic fuel bills.

Keep at 'em - the useless lot of snivelling, money grabbing parasites.

Boot out the countless MILLIONS of illegal migrants that are cluttering up all major services in the UK - and costing US a fortune.

Get out of Europe, Iraq and Afghanistan. Our military would be better concentrating on defence of the realm.

WHY NOT REMOVE THE VAT?

30.05.08, 8:54am

Why mess about with complicated rebates?

Why not just take the 5% tax off domestic fuel and get the tax from somewhere else?

How about:

1. Non-resident drivers licences valid 3 months, charged at port of entry to all holders of foreign driving licences

2. Temporary vehicle excise duty on foreign registered vehicles valid 3 months and charged at port of entry

3. Raise tax on non doms

4. Increased tax band for all earners over £100K

5. Non-resident remittances tax, charged on all foreign bank transfers other than thise for legitimate trade purposes

Take tax off domestic fuel.
