DOCUMENTARY: RUSSELL WATSON - FIGHTING FOR LIFE: TONIGHT

Friday May 30,2008

Sir Trevor McDonald meets self-styled “People’s Tenor” Russell Watson in an exclusive interview for Tonight.

The popular opera singer, who hails from Salford, came to the nation’s attention in 1999. His debut album, The Voice, was number one in the classical charts both here and in the US, making history as the first time a British artist had held both positions.

Four more successful albums followed, but Watson’s life and brilliant career changed for ever in 2006 when he was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumour.

He endured a two-year medical battle, undergoing emergency surgery on two occasions. Sir Trevor speaks to the brave star about his ordeal, during which he focused on surviving in order not to leave his two daughters fatherless, and hears how the whole experience made him re-evaluate his life.

The programme also follows Watson as he returns to the hospital where he was treated and meets some of the staff who helped him through his devastating illness.
