INDIA: A SENSE OF A PLACE

Story Image

Friday May 30,2008

Text by Catherine Bourzat, Photographs by Laurence Mouton and Sergio Ramazzotti (Thames & Hudson £22.50)

A sumptuous photo album of India that goes behind the heaps of coloured spices and images of the Taj Mahal to create a more intimate picture of this vast country.

Organised thematically rather than geographically it mirrors the onslaught to the senses of seeing India for the first time.

There are bustling chapters on markets and waterways and others on the serenity of the mountains and tea cultivation.

Interspersed are old photographs, posters and labels evoking India’s history as well as the atmosphere of today. Left, a young woman washes herself at a step-well.
