The latest scheme put forward by Schools Secretary Ed Balls - inviting British-born imams into schools to speak about growing extremism among young people - has been greeted with derision.

Under the plans, the imams would teach citizenship so pupils learn about the Koran and Islam in the context of a multicultural society.

But critics have branded the proposals as unworkable and unnecessary, describing them as yet another workless Government gimmick.
