RONALDO WILL ROT RATHER THAN GO TO REAL

Story Image

Ronaldo

Sunday June 1,2008

By John Richardson

Manchester United’s owners the Glazers have told manager Sir Alex Ferguson that they would let Cristiano Ronaldo rot in the stands rather than sell him to Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants have been openly courting Ronaldo much to United’s growing annoyance, and are believed to be trying to push the player into asking for a transfer.

But even if Ronaldo starts to be disruptive and Real Madrid come in with a world record transfer bid of £60million... United won’t be tempted.

Ferguson revealed: “I’ve had a couple of meetings with the Glazers and their attitude is ‘screw Real Madrid’. If need be they would sit a player in the stand, I am telling you. There is absolutely no doubt about that.”

In fact, despite the chance to make a huge profit on their Portuguese international, the Glazers are prepared to play hard ball with Real Madrid – and the player himself.

Ferguson today leaves for his annual holiday in the south of France in the knowledge that Ronaldo will still be a United player when he returns.

Fergie added: “They will not give in to these people. The Glazers have got balls, I can tell you. I have been delighted with them in that respect.”

Ferguson has already revealed to Sunday Express Sport that the player he plucked from Sporting Lisbon will not be allowed to leave – at least for another two years – despite Real Madrid mounting an intimidating  campaign to unsettle the player and guide him into their clutches.

Some boardrooms might have caved in, especially with a fortune on offer for Ronaldo, but United’s American bosses are not for turning.

Ferguson added: “The Glazers have been good to me. They have been good to this club, believe me.

“They have been brilliant owners. There has been all this nonsense about how they took the club into debt.

“If I wanted to buy Marks and Spencer, do you think I could go under the floorboards and pull up three billion quid? I would go to the bank right away.

“There’s no doubt they got this club on the cheap. Even in this recession they could sell it on for £1.3billion.”

But Ferguson is delighted that they won’t sell Ronaldo – finally putting this long, drawn-out saga to bed.

UNITED RIGHT TO TAKE HARD LINE

01.06.08, 7:24pm

"...Why are Man United insistant in holding on to their best players, when they continually take the best from other teams?" expatriot1000

While complaining about United's stance with Ronaldo, you have summed up exactly why they are right.
The whole point of a sound transfer policy is to buy the best players you can afford while retaining the best players you already have.
And yes, United would have struggled to win anything this season without Ronaldo.
The other reason they are sticking to their guns is to hold the player to the contract he signed just 12 months ago (which dramatically improved his wages in exchange for a 5 year commitment).
If United allowed Ronaldo to simply walk away from that commitment (even for a world record fee) it would make a mockery of the very agreement that has so richly rewarded the player.
Also, it would set a very bad precedent if Real Madrid were to get away with courting the player through his agent and the media, rather than through the club that holds his registration.

ENCHANTING!

01.06.08, 8:54am

So Ronaldo can go into the stands and rot before they sell him!...Perhaps this will encourage him to find some way of leaving this Bombastic regime!...Why are Man United insistant in holding on to their best players, when they continualy take the best from other teams?
Man united without Ronaldo and Liverpool without Torres would just be another couple of average teams in the premier league stuggling to win anything!
