DOCUMENTARY: HOW TV CHANGED BRITAIN

Story Image

John Thaw and Dennis Waterman in The Sweeney

Sunday June 1,2008

By 8pm, Channel 4

No matter how much we all like to think how interesting our lives are, at some point in a busy week we will undoubtedly all find ourselves untouched in front of the box – be it a clapped out black and white or new-fangled, state of the art flat screen.

This addictive new mini series looks at the impact that the small-screen phenomenon of television has had on all our daily lives.

The first series episode looks at shows such as The Sweeney and, er, Dixon Of Dock Green, have influenced the relationship between the general public and the police.

Though, honestly, if TV shows like this can edge our thoughts, maybe we should go back to the drawing board and re-think our evening’s entertainment.
