LAMPARD: New contract on offer

Monday June 2,2008

By Tony Banks

FRANK Lampard has admitted he is tempted by the prospect of working with Jose Mourinho when he is confirmed as the new manager of Inter Milan.

Lampard flew to Dubai for a family holiday on Thursday to mull over the most important decision of his career, having received an improved contract offer from Chelsea. But the Daily Express understands he has already told close friends at the club he is interested in the prospect of a move to the San Siro, with informal approaches having been made by the Italians.

A Chelsea source said: “Frank is tempted by the prospect of joining up with Jose again. They still have a really close friendship and Frank regards the period when he worked with Jose as the best time of his career.

He still has a great affection for Chelsea, but he feels the time may now be right to move on.

“It is a massive decision. Frank feels indebted to the club for the way they supported him after the death of his mother.”

It remains to be seen whether Lampard will be swayed by the new offer of about £130,000 a week while he mulls over his future. Mourinho is expected to be confirmed as Inter’s new manager in the next 24 hours.

He and Lampard have a strong relationship and have often been in contact since Mourinho left Chelsea in September.

Chelsea are desperate for Lampard to stay and talks are set to take place at the end of this week. Still looking for a successor to Avram Grant, they do not want to lose one of their most important players at such a key time.

Guus Hiddink has ruled himself out of the running, but the Russia coach told Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek he believes fellow Dutchman Frank Rijkaard could be a good choice to succeed Grant. “He could fit in very well,” said Hiddink.
