TROUBLED football idol Paul Gascoigne needs to be permanently locked up against his will, according to former teammate Gary Mabbott.

As fears for Gazza's health rise, close friend Mabbott said that he will not recover unless he is contained for a lengthy period so he can receive treatment.

The former Tottenham player told BBC Radio 5 Live today: "The only way Paul can get help is if he can be contained.

"Every time the treatment gets started Paul believes that after being detoxed he's ok, so he comes back out and relapses almost immediately."

Former England star Gazza has already been sectioned twice under the Mental Health Act due to his alcohol problems.

But each time the troubled star has been released again.

And yesterday, just hours after being released from hospital, he was found in an alcohol-induced slump at a hairdressers.

Mabbott believes he needs to be locked up permanently and is urging the authorities to take control of the situation.

He said: "Even after his suicide attempt he was released back onto the streets. He needs to be contained so work can be done over a period of time to overcome his serious problems."

And he added that the much-loved former football hero doesn't realise how serious his condition is.

He said: "He's not a celebrity drunk. He's suffering from a very serious illness which has led him to believe he's not as bad as he is.

"He doesn't grasp the gravity of the situation because of the condition he has. He doesn't just have addiction problems, he has a number of serious illnesses.

"He has self destructive urges which could lead to serious tragedy."
