CERVI LOOKS TO ITALY TO SECURE CELTIC DREAM

DREAM MOVE: Dominic Cervi

Friday June 6,2008

By SCOTT BURNS

US INTERNATIONAL keeper Dominic Cervi is trying to secure an Italian passport in a bid to finalise his dream move to SPL champions Celtic.

Express Sport revealed back in April that the Hoops were on the American Olympic star’s trail and had taken him on trial.

The 21-year-old impressed senior goalkeeping coach Jim Blyth and Celtic have now decided to make their move after sending Stevie Woods out to watch him star in the recent Toulon Tournament.

Celtic are keen to push the deal through but Cervi doesn’t meet the visa requirements to enter the UK although he is hoping to bypass that by gaining Italian citizenship - via his dad’s side of the family.

Cervi, a giant 6ft 6ins, said: “I was training with Celtic for about three weeks. They also came to Toulon to watch me play, so I must have done okay in their eyes.

“They said they liked what they saw. We’re currently trying to work through that connection to get an Italian passport. My great-grandparents were the ones who came over from Italy.

“It’s actually easy to trace because it was my Dad’s paternal grandfather, so the names were easy.”

The Hoops are in the market for at least two goalkeepers this summer and that number could be increased if first-choice Artur Boruc can secure his dream move off the back of his Euro 2008 campaign with Poland.

Cervi is seen very much as one for the future and would come in as back-up for Gordon Strachan’s No1.

Celtic believe Cervi is one of the best young goalkeepers around and if they can cut through the red tape can grab themselves a real diamond for nothing.

The young Yank managed to slip under the MLS radar and even though Chicago Fire picked him in their draft he decided to knock back their offer and is now a free agent.

Since then the former Tulsa College starlet has had a rapid rise to fame.  He has been called up to the US Olympic team and was named in Bob Bradley’s full squad for the recent friendly with England.
