CUDDLY TOYS BANNED FROM DUSTBIN LORRIES

BANNED: Cuddly toys

Friday June 6,2008

By Carolyn Armstrong

DUSTMEN have been ordered to remove cuddly toys from their lorry dashboards – over fears they could tempt children to run into the road.

Bosses at waste management company Haringey Enterprise told wagon drivers that displaying the traditional mascots was unprofessional and a health and safety risk.

In a memo, general manager Doug Taylor told staff they would face disciplinary action if they did not remove the toys.

He wrote: “Quite why adults would wish to decorate their vehicles this way is frankly beyond me.

“These items could attract young children who may run into the road and suffer injury as a result.

“On the grounds of health and safety and presenting a professional image of our company, I want all such decorations taken down and disposed of with immediate effect.”

But staff at the firm, which carries out contract work for Labour-run Haringey Council, north London, attacked the rules.

One worker, who asked not to be named, said the borough suffered from continual fly-tipping and rubbish, and management were constantly cutting services.

He said: “We then have to suffer the managing director badgering staff to remove their cuddly mascot toys from their lorries.

“It beggars belief. You’d have thought the bosses would have had a lot more to worry about, like keeping our dirty streets clean. The lads are very angry.”

Councillor Martin Newton, the local Lib Dem environment spokesman, said: “I understand the safety worries of obstructing views from large vehicles. But it seems that Haringey Enterprise should have bigger worries ensuring the people of Haringey get the rubbish and recycling collection service they deserve.

“That’s far more important than a few cuddly toys.” Haringey Trades Council president Keith Flett said the situation bore all the hallmarks of a power struggle.

He said: “The amount of rubbish is exponentially increasing and that is obviously a safety issue.”

A Haringey Enterprise spokesman said: “This instruction has been issued to ensure that Enterprise operational vehicles represent the company in a professional and business-like manner and to avoid the health and safety hazards that might arise from items obstructing the view of drivers and the possibility that children may approach vehicles to observe or touch cuddly toys, thereby placing them in danger.”

The memo comes just two weeks after Haringey borough was shamed when a survey claimed it had the dirtiest streets of 351 local authorities studied.

The survey, which was compiled by the GMB union using Audit Commission data, claimed that 40 per cent of pavements fell below acceptable standards for litter levels in 2006/07.

But the council claimed that the proportion of dirty streets had decreased from 40 per cent to 20 per cent in a year.

It said it had invested in street cleaning, provided a litter-picking service and stepped up enforcement on fast-food outlets.

AND FURTHERMORE . . .

06.06.08, 8:16pm

Why aren't Haringey Council putting forth more effort to prevent another Victoria Climbie horror story from breaking? Have they cleaned house at Social Services yet? Probably not. Just going for 'soft targets' to be seen doing something, regardless how petty..

'ELF AND SAFETY, AGAIN!!!

06.06.08, 8:05pm

IN THE ABSENCE OF A VALID EXCUSE, cite Health and Safety!

Surely if this lot of to$$ers had their way, all the inhabitants of the UK would huddle in the cupboard beneath the stairs and wait for the end to come . . . except there may be health and safety concerns about even being in the cupboard

WHAT A LOAD OF BULL. THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE BEARS, IT'S THE LITTERBUGS.

06.06.08, 3:22pm

Who is littering these streets to such a degree that: "The memo comes just two weeks after Haringey borough was shamed when a survey claimed it had the dirtiest streets of 351 local authorities studied"? That's the question, not the actions of, or bosses of, the ones picking up after other's dirty habits.

At least the author of this directive had a reason, and a goal - professionalism, how things look. Apparently not the residents of Haringey borough who seem to think that their garbage is everyone else's problem. You throw garbage on the street, a candy wrapper, or a cigarette butt out your car window, where I live, and are observed, it is an instant $500 fine.

The dustmen can drive around with King Kong on their lorries and be professional, as they usually are, it's the residents of Haringey who need to receive some memos - on what passes for decent human behavior, and to clean up THEIR act, for heaven's sake!

I AM SURE THIS CANNOT BE TRUE

06.06.08, 10:41am

I am sure this Doug Taylor is a figment if someones imagination as no real human being would have made such an order. Maybe in the interests of health and safety they could block the fresh air vents and make the windscreen mist up or block the driver's vision by being too big but certainly not the reason given in the paper.

I'm a reasonable man but if such a person did say such a thing and meant it, he should be strung up and made a laughing stock along with all the other bureaucrats the make stupid statements. Tie him to the front of a dustcart and drive him around the borough.
