AVIEMORE ON THE BANKS OF THE ... THAMES!

MISLEADING: American website

Friday June 6,2008

By By Tom Fullerton

AMERICAN travel operators have incurred the wrath of their Scottish clients after describing the country’s ski capital as part of London.

A major website was paid by a string of holiday cottage owners in Aviemore to show off their properties to the lucrative US tourism market.

However, the site, alwaysonvacation.com, listed their homes as lying on the doorstep of the Houses of Parliament, St Paul’s Cathedral and Buckingham Palace, more than 500 miles away.

The website’s blurb reads: “Aviemore has a huge depth of historic attractions, including 4 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Houses of Parliament, St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, the Tower of Aviemore, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace. The River Thames is the heart of Aviemore.”

Furious cottage owners have demanded refunds from the American company, which recently launched the UK version of its site.

Aviemore Holiday Homes paid almost £500 to list five of their cottages on the site.

Manager Anne Leith said: “I think what they have done is really despicable.”

A spokesman for the site claimed the mistakes would soon be corrected.
