THERE'S an interesting band of Seventies rock groups that occupy the middle ground, but are acceptable to tastes outside.

Bands like Steely Dan, Traffic and The Doobie Brothers are good examples – and so is The Steve Miller Band.

Their melodic, laid-back yet strangely propulsive rock is best heard on 1976’s Fly Like An Eagle - an album that betrays the group’s psychedelic West Coast roots with its trickling synthesiser notes and spacey intros, while sounding utterly contemporary.

Live In Chicago, a two-night sell-out performance from the summer of 2007 at Chicago’s famous Ravina theatre, saw an audience of 35,000 eat, drink and dance in the regal candelabra light of this famous venue, built in 1904 for the Chicago Symphony.

Although in his mid-60s now, Miller’s voice still has the breezy pitch of 30 years ago as he sails through hits lThe Joker, Rock’N Me, Serenade, Abracadabra and Take The Money And Run.

Disc two of this package treats fans to a tour of Miller’s Chicago, the city he moved to in 1964 to get involved in the local blues scene. Fittingly, he visits the address of Chess records, and many of the ghetto areas where the young musician saw Muddy Waters, Junior Wells and Bo Diddley play.

It’s fascinating viewing, both capturing the thrills of a Steve Miller concert while framing the man within the musical history – the blues – so dear to him.
