BROWN BLOCKS OUR FUEL PETITION

BULLY: Gordon Brown

Saturday June 7,2008

By Macer Hall, Political Editor

THE Daily Express has been gagged by Downing Street in a cowardly attempt to silence our readers over fuel tax.

Gordon Brown yesterday banned our petition – demanding an immediate cut in fuel duty – from the No10 website.

The action by his lackeys was a snub to the thousands of Daily Express readers who have already backed our crusade for justice for motorists.

It made a mockery of the Prime Minister’s claims to be running an open and “listening” Government.

But last night his  bullying attempt at censorship lay in tatters.

For supporters were given the chance to back our new fuel tax petition right here on the Daily Express's own website.

The Prime Minister has clearly been rattled by the pressure exerted by our loyal army of readers, which has seen almost 50,000 of them fill out vouchers calling for the fuel duty to be slashed.

SEARCH UK NEWS for:

These will be collected and delivered to Downing Street, where Gordon Brown will no longer be able to ignore them – however much he might like to.

Mark Wallace, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “The Government is clearly scared of the Daily Express voicing public anger at the level of fuel duty. It is absurd, petty and cowardly of ministers to block this petition.”

Last year, more than 350,000 people signed the Daily Express’s anti-inheritance tax petition on the Downing Street website.

It was one of the best supported of the thousands of petitions on the site and helped to pressurise the Government into a major U-turn, significantly raising death duty thresholds.

Now No10 once more appears to be trembling at the prospect of a similar mass movement gaining momentum.

The case for a significant cut in fuel duty became even more pressing yesterday as international oil prices again surged towards record levels.

Crude oil leapt almost 10 dollars to the 134 dollars-a-barrel mark, within sight of the 135.09 dollars high seen two weeks ago.

Petrol was last night selling at an average of 116.66p a litre, up from 116.59p the previous day. A total of 50.35p of that sum is taken up by fuel duty, with a further 17.37p going in VAT.

Diesel hit an average price of 130.09p yesterday, rising from 129.94p the day before.

Again, 50p of that is swallowed up by fuel duty, plus more than 19p in VAT.

At the same time, experts warned that a pay dispute involving Shell tanker drivers could help to push diesel over the £6-a-gallon mark.

A strike is expected to leave more than 929 petrol stations without fuel, causing panic-buying at other garages.

Brendan McLoughlin, founder of the website PetrolPrices.com, said: “The strike couldn’t come at a worse time. The recent strike at Grangemouth oil refinery tipped unleaded over £5 a gallon, and if the Shell strike goes ahead there is no doubt that diesel will push well past £6 a gallon.”

Downing Street officials cited bureaucratic technicalities for blocking the Daily Express petition. An email from No10 said: “I’m sorry to inform you that your petition has been rejected again.”

It claimed our petition had been ruled out because others on the website already carried a similar message.

“There are many petitions already calling for reductions in fuel duty,” said the email.

“Your petition will now appear in the list of rejected petitions.” Downing Street declined to discuss the refusal further. But Mr Brown cannot avoid our readers’ verdict.

As well as the vouchers being printed every day and eventually due for delivery to Downing Street, supporters can now back the crusade online.

Simply sign our new fuel tax petition right now  – and send a message to No10 that they can’t silence Britain’s overtaxed drivers.

Our petition asks the Prime Minister “to ensure the 2p-a-litre fuel duty rise planned for October 1 is scrapped and that instead fuel duty is substantially cut.”

It adds: “Soaring petrol and diesel prices are adding to the financial burden on millions of families who already face big increases in other living costs such as council tax, food and utility bills.”

COMRADES MGABE AND BROWN

08.06.08, 10:54am

These two, are they that desperate to hang on to power that they think that they can bully their citizens into submission? So much for this government saying that they are an open government. Browns gov-mint is bleeding our country dry with all the taxes, but the duty and V.A.T. on fuel is now the main thing affecting us all. Brown will have to take his head out of the sand and start listening to the people before we have anarchy on the streets.

BROWN BLOCKS OUR FUEL PETITION

If he had half an ounce of sense he'd pull Britain out of the EU. With the money saved he'd not need any new taxes, in fact he could give everybody a rebate and still be rolling in it

BROWN BLOCKS OUR FUEL PETITION

07.06.08, 11:44pm

Brown?, Mugabe? is there a difference? I don't think so. This arrogant band of morons collectively known as Nulabour urgently need to refer to a dictionary and learn the meaning of DEMOCRACY, you know, the buzz word because I see precious little of it. There is absolutely nothing democratic about this country for as much as it bleats that it is.

For Brown to block this petition shows utter contempt on his part and I wish, I REALLY wish this misserable excuse for a one eyed human scotsman would telephone ME AT HOME, I am sure the phone would be at least a foot away from his miserable lughole, the peice of slime.

If this arrogant, contemptuous halfwit thinks he can turn things around for the next general election, he is sadly mistaken. Only in this coutry would a government impose several hundred percent on fuel under the banner of TAX, then sit back and blame the oil industry, wake up Brown and smell the roses. The people of this country hate, loath and detest you with a vengeance.

So this is what he calls listening to the people of Britain is it, the Police considering strike action over the abominable manner in which they have been treated, the people pushed to the limit and just about ready to take to the streets and hang any politician they get their hands on. There will be riots soon unless this idiot either steps down or ACTUALLY DOES SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE.

I cringe every time I see or hear that IDIOT Brown and his "we live in a democracy". Those hated words, Democracy, Respect, both of them used but absolutely nobody knows what they mean.

It is time for a completely new political party, the peoples party, to take back the NHS from private hands, hit back against the energy giants, reform the police and give them carte blanche to stop and search and rid these kids of guns and knives. We need to take back our country, not that I am in any way particularly proud of it.
