Muslims to debate 42-day detention plan

Saturday June 7,2008

Faith schools and the 42-day detention limit will be under discussion at a meeting convened by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB).

About 300 people, including key imams and community leaders, are expected to attend a gathering on Sunday at the London Muslim Centre in Whitechapel, east London.

The meeting will look at the role of the British Muslim community in 10 years' time in a discussion chaired by Dr Abdelwahab el-Affendi, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Democracy at the University of Westminster.

MCB spokesman Inayat Bunglawala said the meeting was likely to address pressing issues facing Muslims today and how they can look beyond the impact of terrorism.

Concerns of parents that the Muslim faith is not being properly taught in state schools was likely to be on the agenda, he said.

"It has been very much focused on the terror issue, we want to look beyond that to see where the community will be in 10 years' time, in terms of education and integration and progress being made. If there are any obstacles and what are the challenges facing British Muslims."

He added: "We will be looking at what is the preferred way forward. Some Muslim faith schools have got state funding. We will be looking at why people are turning to this sector, why parents are becoming increasingly disillusioned with the state sector.

"We know that there is general concern about the teaching of faith issues and whether schools sufficiently teach the Muslim faith in schools."

Mr Bunglawala said there had already been some "interesting proposals" such as inviting imams into schools.

Mr Bunglawala said it was inevitable that the 42-day detention limit, due to be voted on by the Commons next week, would be raised as it was likely to affect the Muslim community.

MCB SHOULD FOCUS ON ISLAMIST EXTREMISM FIRST

07.06.08, 7:36pm

The MCB would do better to focus on confronting the backing by a Muslim world of Islamist/fundamentalist extremists, who are spawned, encouraged, nurtured and armed often in mosques funded and built in host western nations by rich Arab states. Global terrorism is exclusively Muslim driven and until organizations such as the MCB acknowledge this fact and are forced to address it, voting on a 42-day detention limit actually falls outide their remit.

The facts are, according to official figures, Muslims still make up only a tiny minority of Britain`s population - some 3% - althought they ensure their voices carry farther and have more weight with this servile government than we should ever have allowed. The MCB must be reminded of this fact often - they do have a website, after all.

WHY ARE WE EVEN DISCUSSING IT WITH THEM?

07.06.08, 3:05pm

When we originally brought in the anti-terror laws at the time the IRA was blowing us up, we did not discuss it with the Vatican or with the Catholic Church.

This is no different. All the IRA were Catholics and all of Al Quieda are Moslems.

UK MUSLIMS DISCUSS 42-DAY DETENTION

07.06.08, 11:11am

Are they going to accept the fact that Muslims around the world have killed innocent people on an absolutely massive scale 9/11, 7/7, Madrid, Bali, and so on. When they are not killing us they are killing each other, look at what has been happening in Iraq. The sooner the killing stops the sooner we can get our ar**s' out of there.
