HERO: Artur Boruc

Friday June 13,2008

By Express Sports Writer

Austria 1, Poland 1

IVICA VASTIC saved the co-hosts Austria with a last-minute penalty after Guerreiro Roger’s strike had looked liked giving Poland a Group B victory.

The Austrians could have been 3-0 up at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, but could not get past inspired Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc until the closing seconds.

Roger struck  against the run of play and there seemed no way back for the Austrians.

Premier League referee Howard Webb was in charge of his first match in the tournament, but the early focus was on Poland’s shaky defence rather than his decisions. With Celtic boss Gordon Strachan at the ground as a pundit, Boruc made three early saves that kept the Poles level.

Two were from Martin Harnik, who first latched on to a Marcin Wasilewski back-pass and raced through only for Boruc to deny him with his feet.

Umit Korkmaz then weaved his way down the left before crossing for Harnik, with Boruc initially diving the wrong way but then using his feet to save. Later, Boruc showed awareness to kick away when Michal Zewlakow passed back.

Poland were exposed yet again with a ball over the top only for Boruc to deny Christoph Leitgeb.

Euzebiusz Smolarek swung the ball over, Marek Saganowski checked back and his deflected shot fell into the path of Roger who tapped in despite a whiff of offside.

It looked all over until a late shirt-pulling offence meant that one of these these teams could still reach the knockout stages.
