UK NEWSDAVIS: PROVE YOU’RE NOT A COWARD BROWNSaturday June 14,2008 By Alison Little, Deputy Political EditorDAVID Davis yesterday branded the Prime Minister a “coward” for hinting Labour would not contest a by-election that was forced by his resignation. Mr Davis said: “If they choose not to take part in this democratic process, they are going to show they are ashamed of their own policies.[>
“Frankly it’s contemptuous of the British electorate if they do that. If it comes to it and they don’t run, I will think that’s just another piece of cowardice by Gordon Brown.”[>
The former Shadow Home Secretary stunned Westminster on Thursday saying he would quit his Haltemprice and Howden seat.[>
He pledged to fight for it back in a one-man crusade against Labour’s “strangulation’’ of civil liberties.[>
The Lib Dems are to stay out of the poll in support of his stance opposing new laws allowing terror suspects to be held for up to 42 days without charge.[>
Mr Brown refused to commit Labour but said: “I think everyone now recognises that this is a stunt that has become a farce and has revealed the deep divisions of the [Tory] party.”[>
Mr Davis’s decision threatens to hit the rising popularity of his party, bringing respite for Labour. Mr Brown said: “In the first test of their policy on the essential issue of national security, the Conservative Party are totally divided on the 42-day proposal.”[>
[> Deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman also insisted the by-election – which could cost up to £80,000 or even more of public money – was “not necessary” and that it was about divisions among Conservatives.[>
Mr Davis denied a split or that he was undermining David Cameron, who beat him to the leadership in 2005. [>
“On the issue of substance, there is not a cigarette paper between us,’’ Mr Davis said.[> Mr Cameron pledged to campaign for Mr Davis but was not consulted and is said to have been angered.[>
He acted swiftly to find a new Shadow Home Secretary and is being urged to go for a full-scale reshuffle.[>
Mr Davis denied being on an “ego trip’’ or that he was suffering a mid-life crisis – but conceded his frontbench career may be over.[>
He hailed positive reactions from the public, including “thousands’’ of congratulatory emails and support from contributors to the Conservative Home Tory website, whose poll suggested 65 per cent of members were “inspired’’ by his move.[>
But comments on the site yesterday also included sharp criticism.[>
Senior Tory MP Sir Patrick Cormack said: “The party won the argument and as one of my Northern Ireland colleagues said, it was a humiliating victory for Mr Brown. Now all the attention is taken off that.’’[>
Frontbencher Chris Grayling said that Mr Davis was “a man of principle fighting on the issues that we know he cares about” adding: “Whether I would have chosen in his position to do exactly the same thing, I don’t know. But he’s taken a courageous decision. I think we should back him.”[>
Mr Davis may find that his main rival is Kelvin MacKenzie, former editor of The Sun, who said he was “90 per cent certain” to stand if Labour did not.[>
However, he was embarrassed when caught on microphone describing nearby Hull as “an absolute shocker”. He later said he had been joking and had never been there.[>
The Monster Raving Loony Party is taking part with a candidate called Madcow.[>
The campaign is poised to start next week with July 10 the likely poll date.[>

STUPID MAN
25.06.08, 2:10pm
How can anybody support this idiot. David Davis prattles on about civil liberties and human rights.
What’s wrong with taking everybody’s DNA at birth? Eventually a meaningful data base would be compiled which really would aid in the solving and reduction of crime and preventing benefit fraud. I know of nobody who objects to having their DNA on file, the vast majority see the benefits of being able to immediately identify suspects. If this technology had been available in the past most serial killers and rapists would have been apprehended much sooner.
What’s wrong with CCTV cameras?, in many areas they reduce crime and actively prevent muggings they certainly help in identifying culprits.
Those against these measures are either criminals or are fortunate enough, like David Davis, to live in very low crime areas, or perhaps are rich enough to pay for their own security, they certainly don’t frequent areas where the majority of the population live.
What’s wrong with detaining suspected terrorists for up to 42 days? It’s hardly a life sentence. So only 50% of terror suspects are eventually charged surely it follows that the other 50% had criminal intent. Why don’t we consider the consequences of releasing the guilty rather than the human rights of the very few who will be detained, if the detention is later considered unreasonable they will be compensated anyway.
Why is my security less important than the human rights of those who continually spout hatred stir up social unrest.
Give it up Davis you are totally out of touch.

Well done DD
With all the problems bubbling under I think they are going to boil over.
Question is, will this help our freedoms or help the government clamp down harder.
I just watched V for Vendetta
I recommend that everyone watch this if you have not.

"PROVE YOU’RE NOT A COWARD BROWN"

Impossible, Brown wouldn't be able to prove any such thing, simply because he is a coward and a bullish one at that.

PRINCIPLES DEAR MAN
15.06.08, 9:19am
One thing you can say about Davis is that he has principles. Whether you agree or not, he has always shown much common sense and respect for the electorate when i have seen him on the media.
So the labour cronies lambast him. Sorry but it ain't gonna cut the mustard labour spouting tory divisions and deriding davis.
The majority of the British electorate are going to crucify you at the next election.
My advice to the tories, get tougher, shrink government, taxes, and simplify. Invest in transport (new train system), education and massively in innovation and get people off their backsides.
The rest will follow.

I FORGOT. A TREASURY SPOKESMAN SAID HE WAS "EXTREMELY CONCERNED" THAT ANOTHER FILE OF SECRET PAPERS HAD BEEN FOUND ON A TRAIN
14.06.08, 9:49pm
If he is "extremely concerned" then I too am "extremely concerned" as to WHY we have an unelected Dictator residing at 10 Downing Street.
Can you just visualise all your personal data being welded to a National Identity Card - and the information being banded about every Government department - all cross-referencing your income, address, where and how you spend your money and what you had for breakfast (THEY WILL KNOW FULL WELL WHAT YOU HAD FOR BREAKFAST BECAUSE THE COUNCIL GESTAPO WOMBLE WOULD HAVE ALREADY POKED HIS SNOUT INSIDE YOUR WHEELIE-BIN AND CHECKED YOUR CEREAL BOXES)?
Dictator Gormless Brown and the rest of his ilk need to put their own House of Conmen in order before they start telling me how to live my life.
As previously posted - my friends living in a banana republic in Africa have a MUCH BETTER quality of life than we currently have in the UK.
Brown the Coward?
NO. Dictator Brown the muppet.

COWARD DICTATOR GORMLESS BROWN LOSES YET ANOTHER TOP SECRET GOVERNMENT FILE - FOUND ON A TRAIN - AGAIN - THE SECOND TIME IN A WEEK
14.06.08, 9:30pm
Yes, read tomorrow's news right here!
Earlier this week some womble who works under Dictator Gormless Brown left a top-secret file on the train from Waterloo to Surrey. What followed was typical mealy-mouthed spin and waffle - "it should not have happened" "the individual responsible has been suspended" yeah! yeah! yeah!
The INDEPENDENT on SUNDAY (tomorrow!!) reports that ANOTHER TOP SECRET GOVERNMENT FILE HAS BEEN FOUND ON A TRAIN FROM WATERLOO STATION.
For the fat lot of good the Cabinet Office does, why don't they all move to the railway siding at Waterloo and take all their clap-trap paper-work with them?
AND NULABOUR WANTS EVERYONE TO HAVE AN IDENTITY CARD?
THEY CANNOT EVEN LOOK AFTER THEIR OWN DOCUMENTS - LET ALONE KEEP MY INFORMATION SAFE.
WE ARE BEING RULED BY MUPPETS OF THE FIRST ORDER.
