American Brandt Snedeker led the way on day three of the US Open as the early starters struggled to go under par at Torrey Pines.

The first two days of play had shown low scores were possible but the early starters today were finding it tough to record them.

Three players among the early groups were in the clubhouse after posting one-under-par rounds of 70 with the rest of the field finding the going tough with San Diego's "June Gloom" rolling in off the Pacific.

The few bright spots early on included Ryuji Imada, Anthony Kim and Boo Weekley, who each shot 70 to get to six over par and a total of 219.

Snedeker was setting the pace today as he was three under with three holes to play.

He got to four under for his round after an eagle at the par-five 13th but gave a shot back with a bogey at 15 and was four over for the tournament.

Brandt Jobe got through his first 10 holes on the South Course in two under and was also four over for the tournament.

Australian Stuart Appleby held a one-stroke lead after carding a second round of 70 which left him at three under.

However, Tiger Woods lurked just one stroke back after a 68 on Friday.
