UK NEWSSTRESS KEEPS 1 IN 4 OF US AWAKE EVERY NIGHTMonday June 23,2008 By Victoria Fletcher and Michael DayNEARLY one in four people suffers insomnia every night because of stress – and women are the worst affected. A survey of more than 9,000 adults also found that one person in three wakes in the middle of the night at least three times a week.[>
Financial fears, family arguments and problems at work are the main reasons.[>
Till now, much research has focused on people who cannot get to sleep in the first place. It was thought a mere seven per cent of the population woke three or more times a week.[>
But the new survey shows that 27 per cent of women wake every night, compared to 19 per cent of men.[>
Academics think this form of insomnia, even if it lasts less than an hour, is just as harmful as other types.[>
Dr Maurice Ohayon, of California’s Stanford university, who led the study, described the findings as “incredible”.[>
“In terms of comparing how common it is with other sleep problems, there is no comparison. This is off the scale,” he said.[>
[> The NHS spends £30million a year on insomnia treatments but till now it has been unclear how widespread the problem is because many people do not go to their GP for help.[>
Many people only suffer insomnia for a few weeks. Often when their stress problem goes away, so does their sleep crisis.[>
But for people with chronic insomnia, sleeplessness can go on for months and even years, causing huge distress, personal problems and illness.[>
The survey findings came as a separate study suggested a link between insomnia and high blood pressure.[>
Research into 1,700 volunteers by Penn State College of Medicine, in Pennsylvania, showed that those who slept fewer than five hours a night were five times more likely to have high blood pressure than the average person.[>
Those who slept well for more that six hours were not at raised risk of high blood pressure. Dr James Walsh, of St Luke’s hospital, in St Louis, Missouri, said that the Stanford university study showed that waking at night was almost as important as not being able to get to sleep.[>
“This is the first really good data we have showing the importance of nocturnal awakening in insomnia,” he said. “It shows a strong overlap between the awakening and other sleep problems and it suggests that nocturnal awakening is a very under-appreciated aspect of insomnia.”[>

What of community based "noise" loud/unpleasent, moronic music all hours of the night , 'Young people' ! bawling and screaming into darkness, dogs barking ?
Do'nt this keep one awake, or wake one ?................Spin word 'stress'
What of the community that causes fear by its very structure / behaviour ?
Can one differenciate between fear and ..."stress ? Is this word "stress" a detracting spin word?
Perchance an effective police force, a judicial system, effective deterrents ease a great deal of the general publics "concern". ? .......
Spin word, "stress"
Notice the use of the words 'Young People' angry, lost, disenchanted, miguided, uncivilized uneducated, undisciplined, no hope'.rs.
How Very sad. ........UK21C
