PADDY INSISTS NEIL LENNON CAN SOLVE ANY PROBLEMS

By Scott Burns

Paddy McCourt believes Neil Lennon’s own personal experiences can help him overcome the problems of being a Celtic star playing for Northern Ireland.

The 24-year-old is hoping his £200,000 move to Parkhead can, once he finds his feet, help force him back into the international set-up and give him the chance to add to the solitary cap he picked up back in 2002, when he appeared against Spain.

McCourt is well aware of the problems of being playing for his country and Celtic, after Neil Lennon received death threats,  but he believes the current Parkhead first-team coach can aid his own club and international ambitions.

The former Derry star said: “If it does happen I would be more than happy to go and play but it is not something I have been thinking about too much.

“I don’t know Neil Lennon but I think he could be a big help to me.

“We all know the stuff he went through with Northern Ireland.

“It made him a stronger and better person for it and I’m sure he will have bag-loads of advice for me and I am looking forward to next Friday to meet him.

“Playing for Northern Ireland, he can also tell me what I can and can’t do.”

The ex-Rochdale youngster, though, is refusing to get ahead of himself and knows he faces a big enough fight just to get into the Celtic squad.

He admitted:  “The international thing is not something I  am thinking about at the moment.

“My first priority is to get in and get a good pre-season.  To get my head down and to get at a level of fitness where I want to be.

“If I get in the Celtic team or round about it then Northern Ireland will want me involved.”
