GLOVES ARE OFF BETWEEN WENGER AND LEHMANN

Friday June 27,2008

Jens Lehmann has taken a swipe at Arsenal by claiming he will be proud to represent them in the final of Euro 2008 even though he has left the club.

Germany keeper Lehmann lost his Gunners place to Manuel Almunia and earlier this month signed for Stuttgart on a free transfer.

But, still clearly upset with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger for dropping him, Lehmann obviously feels Germany’s progress in Switzerland and Austria proves he should still be the Gunners’ first choice.

“It would mean a lot to win this tournament,” said Lehmann.

“The difficult season I had was down to my manager. We had some discussions and I always told him what I was thinking about his decision.

“But I’m quite proud to represent Arsenal in the final.

“In my club career I have been very fortunate. All of my teams have made it to a European Cup final. So I hope to win this time in the European Championship final with Germany.”

Wenger, though, could well argue Lehmann’s play in these finals has vindicated his decision.

Lehmann was at fault for both goals in Wednesday’s 3-2 semi-final victory over Turkey and has been shaky for much of the tournament.

But Lehmann is sure he and his team-mates will return to their best for Sunday’s final in Vienna as the Germans chase a record fourth European Championship title.

“Somehow, having six days off kills the team a little and you saw that in our game against Turkey,” Lehmann added.

“Every other team that had five or six days off got knocked out of the tournament.

“This little break interrupts your rhythm. Turkey’s first goal was a warning for us because then we came back into the game. We were relieved in the end. I can’t tell you why Germany get to so many finals and win so many tournaments as it’s our secret.”

Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack admitted Germany were below par against the Turks, but believes the team again showed their winning mentality. He said. “You can see what is possible when you have the will.”

Colin Kazim-Richards, meanwhile, says he proved his English doubters wrong with his performances for Turkey.   Leytonstone-born Kazim-Richards hit the bar twice against the Germans and gave Philipp Lahm a torrid evening.

He said: “I’ve seen a glimpse of my future and pray my career can carry on in the right direction. I have proved people wrong, but I hope those who doubted me keep on doubting because it motivates me.”

Turkish coach Fatih Terim is likely to step down to take a club job in Europe, having taken his country to the semi-final of Euro 2008.
