STRUGGLE: Mixu Paatelainen

Saturday June 28,2008

By Jim McLean

Skipper Rob Jones insists Hibs have no option but to take their minds off Barcelona and concentrate on next weekend’s Intertoto Cup bow, because the tie could shape their entire season.

Manager Mixu Paatelainen has confessed he had been struggling to keep his squad’s focus on the fast-approaching European tie with Swedes Elfsborg following their return to training on Monday.

With less than a month until the Spanish superstars of Barca come calling, the chatter in the changing room has been of facing up to some of the world’s best players during the the Catalans’ second summer camp in Scotland.

However, Jones is clear that the potential prize of a place in the UEFA Cup awaiting him and his team-mates means must place Europe’s third-tier tournament ahead of one of the continent’s greatest-ever clubs.

He said: "You don’t get the opportunity to play Barcelona every day, do you? When it came out that we were playing them it gave the boys a little boost, and it’s a game that we’re all dreadfully looking forward to.

"It will be a fantastic occasion for the players, the football club and the supporters. It will be an interesting game, I’m sure of that, and probably exhausting.

"But the main work starts on July 6 against Elfsborg. That will be a terribly difficult game and the two games we play in the Intertoto Cup are probably the most important games of our pre-season.”
