MATCH OF THE DAY LIVE: EURO 2008, BBC1, 6.55PM ****

Sunday June 29,2008

Ernst Happel is our host - oops, no, sorry, that's the name of the stadium - as three weeks of top European footie action reach what we hope will be a suitably dramatic climax.

Now, normally at this stage we find the two main terrestrial channels going head-to-head for viewers, each keen to convince us it's second-to-none when it comes to covering such grand sporting occasions.

But not this time. No, on this occasion, Gary Lineker and the team have it all to themselves, ITV having decided before the tournament began that it wouldn't get drawn into a final-night ratings battle when no home nations were going to be involved.

The fact that it's a battle the BBC always wins by an absolute mile may also have had something to do with this decision.
