Post-mortem examinations prompt Scotland Yard press conference

Thursday July 3,2008

Police investigating a double murder are to hold a press conference at Scotland Yard.

It comes after post-mortem examinations on two men found dead following a fire at a flat showed they died from multiple stab wounds.

The men, both French nationals in their 20s, were stabbed in the head, neck and chest, Scotland Yard said.

Their bodies were found in a ground-floor flat in New Cross, south-east London, on Sunday night.

Officers have launched a double murder inquiry and have appealed for information.

Emergency services were called to the building in Sterling Gardens at about 10pm.

The fire was put out and the bodies found in the flat. Police have identified the men but their names have not been released.

Det Chief Insp Mick Duthie said: "I am appealing for anyone who was in the area at any time, and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious near the address, to get in touch.

"I am particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anyone near the premises at about 9.30pm on Sunday."
