POSH & BECKS: THE MUSICAL

Story Image

David & Victoria Beckham

Thursday July 3,2008

DON'T tell the image-conscious David and Victoria Beckham, but a satirical comedy musical entitled MacBecks, based on their life, is to be staged.

The show follows the formula of I Keano, the spoof about footballer Roy Keane’s walk-out from the Irish World Cup squad, which had sell-out runs at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre before moving to Salford.

Two of the I Keano cast, Gary Cooke and Malachy McKenna, have scripted the new show, which opens in January, and Long Road Productions, a company that has worked with Riverdance, will be involved in the staging.

“We’re very excited by the script – it’s a wild comedy romp that borrows from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, King Lear, Romeo And Juliet, as well as Cyrano de Bergerac,” says Long Road’s director Ronan Smith.

Posh will be portrayed as an ambitious Lady Macbeth for whom husband David sacrifices his career.

Other characters include former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Beckham’s former PA and alleged ex-lover Rebecca Loos.

Unlike I Keano, a story mainly of Irish interest, it is hoped MacBecks, based on “the world’s best-known footballer”, could have international box office appeal. Posh and Becks are unlikely to attend the first night.
