Lee Naylor: Linked with Aston Villa

Friday July 4,2008

By Andy McInnes

Celtic have intensified their bid to land Roma star Vitorino Gabriel Antunes on a loan deal after Hamburg boss Martin Jol insisted their other target Thimothee Atouba is not for sale.

The Portuguese left-back is being lined up as a direct replacement for Parkhead ace Lee Naylor who wants to return to England and is being linked with Martin O'Neill's Aston Villa.

Antunes agent Amaro Valente last night revealed he has several offers on the table for the £1m rated defender and revealed the SPL champions have been in contact to make him an "interesting proposal"

"The future of Antunes is still very unclear. Bologna and Chievo want Gabriel and also Celtic have made us an interesting proposal which we are considering.'' said Valente.

"We will be told soon whether the player is in Roma’s plans for this season or be sent to a team which will play him regularly."His situation will be resolved in the coming days."

Highly-rated Antunes was wanted by several of Europe’s top clubs including Athletico Madrid, Benfica and Aston Villa when he quit Pacos de Ferreira last year.

He and Roma team-mate Matteo Brighi have both been watched by Celtic scouts in recent months

Jol meanwhile has told Celtic not to waste their time bidding for Atouba because he is determined to keep him at Hamburg.

The Dutchman turned up for his first day in his new post and insisted he wants his former Tottenham left back to remain at the AOL Arena next season."I know Atouba from his time with Tottenham, Jol explained.

"He can still develop further. He is good in his own half but can still become better in the other half."

Controversial Atouba has had his fair share of run ins with the club and its supporters during his time with the Bundesliga big guns but Jol is prepared to give the 26-year-old another chance.
